Minky and Jane

I've been MIA for good reason... busy!

Here's a customer's baby quilt I recently finished. This was my first Minky backing quilt so before starting, I conferred with my knowledgeable friend Jennifer of Sister of The Brush to see what tips she could share. She has experience with Minky and she gave me some great advice! Thanks Jennifer!

Jill chose Cotton Candy panto for an E2E treatment. I hear there will be some appliqué in the blue rectangle to finish it off.

This is a lovely, very well pieced little quilt. It was a pleasure to quilt and Minky behaved nicely!

Thank you Jill for this opportunity to test my skills on Minky! I would love to see it when the appliqué is done.

Our Dear Jane club has met a few times since mid-July... we're all having fun! The first day was spent looking over a member's very organized system drooling at her extensive collection of reproduction fabrics! I must say, being an organized person myself, this girl has me beat! Susan has her DJ book spiral bound, then each block copied, with a page or two of tips on that block placed in a page protector along with the fabric she will use for that block. Then she can refer to an enlarged copy of the labeled squares of the whole quilt where she glued a small square of each fabric as she collected them. She started this project many years ago and has been collecting ever since, carrying her sheet with snippets of fabrics with her as her guide. She also has more than 40 blocks done so she's well ahead of the rest of us. Since she's thought out her quilt in such an orderly way, she is ready to move to the construction of her blocks. That to me is such an advantage... she no longer has to fuss over which fabric for which block! That is where I am at a loss. I'm still unsure of my design but I'm getting there... albeit slowly!

This Dear Jane will not be constructed in the traditional manner... I've taught my appliqué method many times in the last few weeks and some of us are using this technique on some of the blocks. We're trying to look at the blocks first to determine what part or parts can be appliquéd instead of piecing them and in some blocks we combine both piecing and appliqué. It makes for some interesting discussions... and great looking blocks!

Here are my first blocks... yes they're taking a bath! I need to remove the glue and since these have been handled quite a bit in the last few weeks, they need some TLC.

Look at the center of G-6 called Papa's star... those star points are 1/4" but I referred to the revised pattern sheet of tips to construct it. On my first attempt, I used regular sewing thread. I found it too thick and decided to hand sew using silk thread. I also trimmed the seams a little more. It lays flatter and I'm much happier with it.

I've been thinking of my design for this quilt for a long time and still find myself questioning my color/fabric choices. At our first meeting, I was still undecided; all I had was the white fabric for the sashings. I drooled over many photos of gorgeous Dear Janes but still had no clue what I wanted mine to look like.

Then I was asked to teach my appliqué method. I chose a block, grabbed some fabric and freezer paper and gave a short demo. That got me going and thinking; I decided to use that same fabric for the 4 blocks placed correspondingly in the corners. My next step had to be fabricating my center block. For me, this will "ground" the quilt... it's the heart of the quilt. After this, it is was easy to choose my next color. A pattern is emerging in my mind and I hope to keep it alive while I take a little break this holiday weekend.

My husband has been busy practicing his woodworking skills... new shelving has gone up in time for another delivery of fabric that will hopefully arrive this week. He's missing some equipment necessary to properly finish the edges so he's asked our carpenter for some help. I must say I'm impressed with DH's work. The shop was in desperate need of more shelves. We keep growing thanks to all our quilty friends!

The fabric can arrive any time now... we're ready!!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend! Spruce It Up Quilt shop will be closed tomorrow Monday August 4th!

Happy 2nd Anniversary to our son Sam and his beautiful wife Jennifer! Love from Mom & Dad!

Happy vs Sad!

Today marks two milestones in our family, one happy and one sad!

Our youngest son celebrates his 24th birthday! He was an active one running around the house being a ninja with make-believe swords made of cardboard tubes. You were a tough little guy, climbing stairs and tumbling down them just for fun!

The plants didn't stand a chance against the crime fighter.

The puddles always needed testing. At times when we visited your father at the office, you had to wear a tie just like your dad. You played hard and slept soundly.

Your hospital experience is something you'd like to forget but the scars and consequences won't allow that. At 10 yrs old, your little body took it's time to recover but you rose up to that challenge.

Writing poetry shows your gentle nature; your memory skills are what most people only dream of. You still play hard and you're on top of your game still winning championships. Most people save their trophies... not you! Only the most recent one! Humble? or is it that they take up too much real estate?

We're proud of you Sam... life has not been boring with you! You are a fine young man, a cherished grandson, a wonderful son, a husband now to a beautiful wife, an adored crime-fighting ninja uncle.

Happy Birthday "Beast"... love mom and dad!

Today also marks the 1st anniversary of my sister Viki's death. This past year has been extremely difficult for all of us but most of all for her Little Waterville (Maine) family! I've blogged about Viki here. We miss you dear sister, think of you everyday and still can't believe you're gone! I'm saying a prayer in your memory.

This January 17th, 2014, I choose to focus on celebrating life in the present, Sam's day. I choose to be happy!

May the sun shine where you are! Hug your family members today!

Outside my window!

Work is being done outside my window today. This orange tree produced abundantly every year for decades and the oranges made the best juice you've ever tasted. We believe it was part of the original ranch's orange grove and was probably here when the house was built in 1951. But it's been dying, little by little. Not long ago we spotted piles of very fine sawdust at the foot of the tree and chunks of bark were peeling off... it was being killed by termites! Or so we thought!

This is what we found inside! Not termites but carpenter ants! They are just as destructive. If I had a better close up or a video of this stump, you would see thousands of ants crawling out of the center! It was disgusting and made me want to scratch an itch that wasn't there! YUK!

The gardener and his helper made good work getting rid of it and they're hauling all of the cut wood to the garden waste center.

Before they fill this in, they're inserting some Termite/ant sticks in the hole and in the top layer... that should take care of these pests!

Much better looking!

Now I'll have an unobstructed view of the yard from my sewing room. I had the gardeners put my large poinsettia planter in this spot. This is a plant I've kept alive for the last 5 years; I cut it back aggressively in Feb/March, replenish it's food and soil and it hasn't disappointed. One year in September I built it a tepee that I would drape over it every evening and remove every morning to get the leaves to change color. It wasn't necessary; the leaves change naturally in late December or early January and it looks spectacular. Just not before Christmas!

Meanwhile, daughter no 2, our rocket scientist, (she's an engineer and works at SpaceX), came to visit this morning to work on Lolah! She has a project that needs quilted fabric so she got a quick introductory lesson then she was flying on her own with little supervision.

She was done in no time at all, quilting some patriotic fabric with wavy lines across the width using Perma Core red on the top and dark beige on the bottom. The backing is navy.

Not bad at all for a first shot at longarm quilting. Once she gets the proper measurements for the piece, she'll return to use the regular sewing machine. I promise photos of that! It's really cute! Did I mention this is for a friend's birthday gift and he's in the armed forces?

Before I leave you to return to my sewing room, I have to show you another picture of our "pet" hawk who has returned everyday since that first sighting! I took this one yesterday... for a brief period, he was sitting on the roof of the pool house but flew up here when I got too close. He hardly looks like the same bird... looks darker! I say "he"; it could very well be a "she"!! What do I know... It's free entertainment...

And lastly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to my little grandson who turns 5 today! 08/08/08 was a great day when you entered our lives! Grandmaman & Grandpapa love you very much! We miss you... Have fun today!
